Tulipa saxatilis on the plateau of Omalos

Tulipa saxatilis grows on rocky slopes, crevices, uncultivated fields and flat clayey areas (such as in these photos taken on the plateau of Omalos). It flowers in March and April. Tulipa saxatilis is scattered around Crete as well as Karpathos, Rhodos and southern Turkey.

The variant Tulipa bakeri was created as a separate Cretan endemic species (in Mountain Flora of Greece)) but has no visible difference. It is said that it occurs at higher altitudes (700 to 2200 m) compared to T. saxalis which occurs from sea level to about 900 m.
