Ammophila Arenaria on sand dunes of the island of Elafonisi
Ammophila
Arenaria is common to a lot of sandy coastal areas. Its flowers which ressemble a corn-ear are not very spectacular but it forms beautiful clumps of grass on sand dunes. It is a very important plant in coastal areas because its roots hold the sand together.
The name is derived from the Greek words ámmos meaning sand and filos meaning friend or lover so 'lover of sand' which describes its habitat perfectly.
